In the short time the EOPCN NP-Led Opioid Clinic has been open, we have been so fortunate to help many people with one of the most difficult challenges they will face. To recognize one of our special patients at the clinic, we would like to share their success story for World Hepatitis Day, July 28th.
This patient came to us through a referral from his pharmacist when he was looking for a regular care provider. In the beginning, it took a few visits to establish a trusting patient/provider relationship. The patient told us that he had a history of Hepatitis C, but he had never been asked if he would like treatment for it. Despite this patient facing barriers, such as housing and food insecurity, long term health issues and substance use, he took responsibility for his health and was able to get all of the testing required to be able to have his Hepatitis C treated.
Nurse Practitioner Ashley Devenney started him on treatment once all of the guideline conditions were met. During his treatment, he had to go to the lab numerous times, have an ultrasound and he walked to the pharmacy every single day to dose for his course of therapy for 12 weeks. Due to his determination, he has been successfully cured of Hepatitis C!
When he came to the clinic for his follow-up appointment once we had confirmation of cure, we had a little celebratory dance party with him. He no longer suffers from abdominal discomfort and has continued to do other things to take care of his health in a positive manner. He is soon to be housed and we have been able to connect him with other resources to improve his quality of life.
How lucky we are to have been involved in his care.
