Antibiotic resistance is both a clinical and an environmental concern. From a healthcare perspective, antimicrobial resistance contributes to millions of deaths globally each year. From a planetary perspective, antibiotic pollution of soil and water facilitates the spread of resistant bacteria and genes. It is estimated that over 90% of antibiotics prescribed in Canada are used in the community, positioning family physicians at the forefront of efforts to tackle this issue.
This toolkit examines evidence-based ways primary care clinicians can be leaders in antimicrobial stewardship.
